The Creek

It might not have been the best show.
It might not have even been that good.
At the very essence of it all, the storylines barely changed. I mean it was always about the same love triangle between Joey, Dawson, And Pacey, as they all struggled to deal with it.
But it doesn't matter.

As someone who only recently watched the entire Dawson’s Creek catalogue, I can say it is a show I will always treasure; if only for the final two episodes of the final season of the show, with Jen dying and all.

Jen’s death just made them all realise what is really important in life. It reminded them that our lives are slowly ending, with each passing second, and that we shouldn’t preoccupy ourselves with the negative aspects of it; that we should embrace and stand up to our fears and our sadness; that we should focus on creating more good times with those we love. Because life is about accepting our roles and doing the best that we can to enjoy our time on this earth, to cherish those people who shape us into the person we are today.

Even if you weren’t a fan of this show, this is the one message I wish we could all take from it. Just like Jen, not all of us were meant to fit in, some of us were meant to stand out and disrupt the peace because that’s life and anything can change everything, at any moment.

Just like Jack, we should embrace who we are and not worry about other people. We shouldn't try to live our lives to suit that of others, because that is a half-life. We should learn to accept ourselves, for only then will others accept us.

Just like Joey, we shouldn’t run away from things that scare us, because fear is natural, and we should try to face up to it. Only once we conquer our fears will there be nothing stopping us from living a happy life, free of fear.

Just like Pacey, we should not force situations to happen. As the song says, whatever will be will be.  We must learn to be patient and allow our destinies to unfold because it will happen, no matter how much it may seem that the world is working against it.

And just like Dawson, we must come to realise that life isn’t about moments created as movies, songs, tv shows and photographs would have us believe. As Dawson so aptly put it, birth is the opposite of death; life has no opposite; life is just life. It is that journey that we will be on until our deaths, shaped and created by our dreams, fears, and those around us.

Even though it was a fictional show focusing on the lives of a group of teenagers, the simple meanings it tried to portray affect us all and will resonate with us for the rest of our lives.

Love your friends and your family.
Life your life as though at any moment it will be taken away from you.
But all in all, just be happy. And remember, only you can make yourself truly happy.

'I Don't Wanna Wait' as used as the theme song for Dawson's Creek for all those nostalgic souls out there:
